I’m an avid gardener, but I’d never been a regular farmer before my wife and I moved into our first home, in 2009.
As a result, our backyard was filled with wildflowers, shrubs, herbs, vegetables and perennials.
For some of the most common weeds, like the cabbage bug, we had to plant them in our garden beds.
The problem was, as we discovered, that we couldn’t grow most of them.
So we’d have to buy them from the local farmers’ market.
We had some success with our garden’s perennial weeds, but the rest, we could barely grow.
We knew we wanted to give back to our community, so we launched a garden club, the Garden Club, which raised money for the community through events, donations and volunteer work.
We also established a monthly fundraiser for community gardens, the Harvest.
We’ve now raised over $250,000 for the Australian Garden Federation.
I was also raised in a family that raised money through community gardens.
I had a huge passion for gardening.
I was an avid farmer as a kid, and I grew up watching my grandfather’s vegetable garden in Adelaide, and watching him in my backyard.
I didn’t realise how much my family’s garden contributed to our society until we moved to Melbourne when I was 20 years old.
When we moved into a house with a big garden, we also started a community garden club called the Community Gardens Club.
We were lucky enough to be part of the Australian Urban Farming Association (AUFAA), which is the only organisation in Australia to work with small and community-based farms to help them develop their systems and produce products.
We’re also the only group in Australia with a dedicated farm shop.
The club’s aim is to bring local produce to a market and make it available for people to buy locally.
To start a garden in Melbourne, we needed to set up a greenhouse.
That was tough.
Melbourne is an urban area, and we needed the land, the space and the space to grow our own food.
It was also expensive.
So, we rented a shed from the Victorian government, which provided us with some space.
But that shed was very small and very old, and it took time to build a greenhouse with the proper equipment.
We got lucky that we were able to get some space for our greenhouse from a nearby town.
As our greenhouse got bigger, we discovered a few more things.
One was that it was a lot more cost-effective to grow food in the back of our shed than it was in our house.
The other thing was that we had access to the sun.
So the greenhouse could be on the roof of our house, which was nice.
At the time, we didn’t have much money.
So I worked on a few things and then we were really fortunate.
Then we got lucky.
One day, the landlord told us that he needed a garden shed and wanted to buy it.
So after the landlord had given us a call, we decided to apply to get a permit for it.
The permit would allow us to grow and sell our own garden produce.
It took about three years, but we finally got the permit, and within five years, we were ready to start.
Growing and selling our own produce started in late 2012 and early 2013.
Our first garden sold out within hours of opening.
We sold over 100,000 plants that year.
We’d have had to buy the produce in a year’s time.
Our second garden opened in April 2013, and then our third in July, so far.
We started selling our produce in the spring and summer.
It’s now grown to about 100,0000 plants, and in the past year, we’ve grown the supply of vegetables from the backyard.
We grow some of our own herbs and perennias, and the prices are competitive.
This year, there’s been a lot of demand for our produce.
The demand is so strong, we’re trying to keep it up.
We need to grow as much as we can, so if we’re lucky, we’ll have to sell more in the future.
I know it’s going to be a challenge, but it’s also rewarding, because I get to grow something I love and give back.
Now that we’ve been in business for a little while, it’s time to see how far we can take it.
It started as an experiment in organic gardening.
We have a greenhouse and we have to build it in the backyard to grow a lot, and to sell vegetables.
That’s what we’re doing now.
We’ll grow a good number of vegetables in the greenhouse over the next few years.
We are hoping to start a full-time business selling vegetables in future.
