Newcastle is about to become the world’s newest butterfly garden, and it’s not the kind you’d expect.
The Butterfly Garden at Newcastle University’s Botanical Gardens is expected to open to the public for the first time on October 6.
“We have been talking about this for a number of years, but we finally got the funding to put it in the right hands,” Dr Tom Stiles, Director of the Butterfly Garden, said.
“There’s a great opportunity to do something very innovative and to be able to show off our work, and to really put it into practice and to share it with people.”
He said the project was about getting people excited about butterflies and showing them a new way of interacting with them.
“The most exciting thing about it is that we’re using a different way of doing things.
We’re putting a butterfly in a container.
It’s a container that is actually just a butterfly, and we’re putting it into the garden,” he said.
Dr Stiles said the idea was to use the butterfly’s natural habitat, and the opportunity to showcase the work of Newcastle University.
“What we’re doing is using a species that is already very popular, and you know we’ve had the butterflies here for the past 30 years, so it’s a really interesting place to showcase what we’re all about,” he told 7.30.
He said it was also about demonstrating how a butterfly can change the landscape of a garden.
“I think we can see how we can really create a better experience for people, by having the butterflies in their garden, so we can use them in a very interesting way,” he added.
“So when they go into the flower beds they’ll just be going into a butterfly garden.”
The Butterfly Gardens have been around for more than 30 years and Dr Stiles says they’re still a work in progress.
“It’s not an exact replica of a natural butterfly, but it’s definitely an evolution of that, which is exciting for us,” he explained.
“That’s why we decided to get a little bit more involved with this project, to see how the butterflies actually look.”
He admitted the butterfly gardens at Newcastle had been in the works for several years.
“They’re not new, they’ve been around since 2001, and they’ve become quite a successful thing in the city of Newcastle,” he admitted.
“But they’re really not the only butterfly gardens that are being developed across the world.”
And so we really wanted to do it in Newcastle, because it’s something that we really believe in and we believe in this kind of collaboration, and that’s why it’s so exciting.
“The butterfly garden at Newcastle’s Botanic Gardens will be the first to open for the public.
