If you find an old bird in a garden you’ll likely be looking for a reward.
“The bird is likely to have been dead for several weeks, and the bird will have eaten it up,” explains Elaine O’Neill, an ornithologist at the University of Queensland.
“It’s a dead carcass and it’s probably not an easy thing to get to.
It can be very difficult to get a bird up the tree or over the fence.”
If you find something that looks like it might have been eaten by a bird, you’ll need to go out and find out what happened.
“The best thing you can do is contact the landowner,” Ms O’Neil says.
“If they can identify the carcass, then they can go and put it back into the ground.”
They might have to do some work to it, but if it’s intact, it could be very valuable.
“So, for example, you could find a large, dead bird lying in the ground or in a tree branch.
You could also look for a large bird that has been dead or dead-on-the-ground for some time.”
So what can you do if a bird appears to have died in your backyard? “
If you see a bird in the area, or even on a tree, and it doesn’t look like it was dead for a long period of time, then it might be something that was an important part of that environment.”
So what can you do if a bird appears to have died in your backyard?
“If you have a good bird-watching or bird-finding skill, you might be able to identify a dead, dead, or dead on the ground bird,” Ms McLeod says.
You can even try to find out who might have eaten the bird.
“There are a lot of people who are just trying to get their hands on some bird food,” Ms Fowle says.
But if you’re not sure you can identify a bird and you just want to check for any dead bird that might be there, there are ways to do that.
“You could go out to the garden and check it out,” Ms Kavanagh says.
You could check for dead birds, as well as any other wildlife that might have recently moved into the area.
“That could include a dead tree stump, dead trees, dead grass, or some dead birds that are hanging around the area,” Ms Besser says.
